Putting a Sustainable Spin on New Year's Resolutions

Making and sticking to a New Year's resolution is an awesome way to start the year! This time around I thought it'd be great to not only try my hand at my usual eat healthy, get healthy resolution but to expand my own limits and really push to keep a green mentality for 2013.

This year I've committed myself to doing my normal activities of being eco-conscious, but also pushing to change my lifestyle of being greener. You're probably wondering what these resolutions are, and trust me they aren't very difficult to stick with so I highly recommend these simple resolutions for everyone!

Recycle
I know almost all of us are committed to recycling, but with so many items to be thrown out we can sometimes forget about what goes in which bin. Re-familiarize yourself with your city's recycling and disposal guidelines that can be found on your city website. By doing this you will be 100% certain that you are recycling all of the products you can!

Give up non-reusable bags
Although Toronto technically got rid of the 5 cent charge in the majority of retail locations, plastic bags can leave a heavy impact on the environment if you are not reusing them or disposing of them properly. Try keeping a cloth or nylon bag with you at all times for shopping purchases, or invest in larger nylon bags for grocery shopping.

Don't buy bottled water
Personally, I feel like water should be free so why pay for it? I highly recommend investing in at least two or more reusable bottles so you can use to bring them to school or work each day. There are so many types to choose from and I guarantee you will not regret it! Having to pay up to $2.00 for a bottle of water is crazy!

Greening your laundry
Everyone appreciates clean laundry and it doesn't take much to change your laundering habits to being green. Committing to an eco-friendly stand on doing your laundry will make you feel good and save on your monthly bills! I'll be the first to admit I don't always do laundry during low-cost or off-peak hours and that is probably one of the first actions I will take in this resolution. Low cost hours mean that it is cheaper to use water and electricity in your home (usually after 7PM throughout the year). I will also commit to washing my clothes in cold water and hang drying the majority of my clothes!

Of course these aren't the only green-resolutions out there, but these are the four I will dedicate on improving in 2013 and hopefully you will too. If you have your own resolutions feel free to share them by commenting below!

Until next time!
Sustainably Yours,

Tami
